Decision making process

The prototype intends to help water managers in their decisions making to:

  1. Anticipate drought and maintain minimum rivers flows in Summer.
  2. Ensure the refilling of reservoirs at the end of the Winter.
  3. Adapt the management in Winter to possible flooding events at Spring while ensuring efficient low flows support in Summer and Autumn.

Behind these decisions, the major stakes concern fresh water supply and flood control over big metropolitan areas as Paris and irrigation for agriculture in sensitive regions as Garonne catchment.

Decision making process

Water stocks: River flows and reservoir filling level
Climate information based on seasonal forecasts
Economic and environmental requirements for water management
Reservoir draining plan for the next months

By providing river-flow forecasts at key period to anticipate the evolution of water-stocks, RIFF aims to help stake-holders for a best  management of water resource reducing drought and flood risks.
